Frank Hodge, Owner Father Earth Organic Farm

I'm Frank Hodge, founder and owner of Father Earth Organic Farm in Lafayette Colorado. I became interested in gardening in the late 50's while working with a family in western Massachusetts. My father worked for Westinghouse, and as a side job, was a sharecropper for a vegetable farm. When school was out in the summer, our family of 6 boys and 2 girls would spend most days from sun up to sun down, harvesting vegetables for the market.

My father died when I was 11 years old, but I continued to work on the farm because minorities couldn't work in most places unless they were over 16. At age 17, I began working in a grocery store, and asked to bring home veggies that they were going to throw out at the end of the day. I noticed that none of the veggies tasted as good as they did when I got them fresh from the farm. Because I liked the taste of fresh farm produce, I was encouraged to begin growing my own vegetables.

I spent some years in college and in the military, and I would always have something growing in the yard, or in my home, or any place I could find a space to plant something. In 1994, I began studying different gardening methods, including permaculture, bio-intensive gardening, wide row gardening, no dig, and hydroponic gardening.

Today, I use what I have learned over the years, to grow the best organic produce I can by incorporating most of the gardening methods I mentioned above. I truly enjoy the connection that a human being has with the land. I really feel that I am a steward of the land, and I believe that if I take care of the land, It will surely take care of me, my family, my friends, and my community.
